The war funding bill and the debate Friday, May 25th
JIM LEHRER: And to the analysis of Shields and Brooks, syndicated columnist Mark Shields, New York Times columnist David Brooks.
Mark, so, after it's all been said and done, what was accomplished by the debate and now the vote on this war funding bill?
MARK SHIELDS, Syndicated Columnist: Well, I think first of all, Jim, I think anybody who pretends to be surprised at the outcome, frankly, does not understand the United States' political system. I mean, we don't have a parliamentary system. If we had a parliamentary system, the Bush administration would have fallen last November, because there was a vote of no confidence in that election, both in Iraq and in the president.

| | IT JUST GETS worse and worse. We already knew that Alberto Gonzales — who, unbelievably, remains our attorney general — was willing to construe the Constitution and the Geneva Conventions however George W. | At our March 31st meeting our club members discussed all of the things that are happening in Calaveras County. Here is a short list of some of the events that are going on:
- Code Pink staged a protest in Angels Camp. Passing motorists honked their horns, gave them "thumbs-up" instead of "rigid-digit" salutes
- Democrats marched in the Murphys Irish Days Parade. We had a great turnout and again we were received very favorably. Things sure have changed since we marched in 2004!
- We had a booth at the Murphys Irish Days Parade. The East County Club made a bunch of buttons (thank you Meg Self!) and they sold like hotcakes! Some of the favorites were: The Dixie Chicks Were Right!; George W. Bush- The Worst President Ever; January 2009- End of an Error.
- We had a vigil in Murphys Park commemorating the 4 year anniversary of the Iraq War. It was a solemn and respectful event that was attended by 61 people
Meanwhile, Calaveras County is having a groundswell of activity concerning the future of our county. We urge all of our members to become involved in this noble cause. This is also a great opportunity to create coalitions with the citizens of our county!
